Creative Golf Tournament Invitation

Creative Golf Tournament Invitation

Client: TurnerBatson Architects
Challenge: Drive attendance and engagement for annual client appreciation golf tournament
Approach: High-impact dimensional mailer designed to stand out and create conversation

The Challenge

For professional service firms, client appreciation events serve dual purposes: relationship building and business development. The invitation itself becomes a touchpoint that either gets discarded immediately or creates a memorable impression that drives conversation.

The goal wasn’t just RSVPs—it was creating a piece that would sit on desks, spark conversations, and reinforce the firm’s creative thinking and attention to detail.

Strategic Approach

Design Thinking

Rather than a standard flat invitation that would be lost in the mail pile, we developed a dimensional tube mailer that immediately signals “this is different.” The format itself creates curiosity before the recipient even opens it.

Contents Strategy

Every item inside served a purpose:

  • Tactile engagement: Crinkle confetti, lightweight golf ball, mini putting green—items that invite interaction
  • Practical utility: Full-sized tee and branded scorecard pencil from the host course—items golfers would actually use and keep
  • Clear information: Invitation insert with all event details and RSVP mechanism

Logistics Considerations

While the creative was ambitious, execution required practical constraints:

  • Weight management to minimize postage costs
  • Assembly process that could be completed efficiently
  • Durability to survive shipping without damage

The mini putting green components (felt, bamboo skewer flag, sculpted clay putter and ball) were handmade to maintain quality and cost-effectiveness at the required quantity.

Outcome

Primary Goal: RSVP Rate

The campaign achieved its core objective—strong RSVP conversion from the targeted guest list, enabling accurate planning for catering, tee times, gift bags, and staffing.

Secondary Benefit: Business Development

Recipients called the office to comment on the creative execution, opening conversations that extended beyond the event itself. The invitation became a credibility signal—demonstrating the firm’s creative thinking and attention to detail in a tangible way.

Long-term Impact

The dimensional format meant the piece stayed on desks rather than being immediately discarded, extending brand visibility and serving as a conversation starter in recipient offices.

What This Project Demonstrates

Audience Understanding: Knowing that architects and construction professionals appreciate creativity and craftsmanship informed every decision.

Strategic Execution: The creative wasn’t decoration—it served clear business goals (attendance, conversation, credibility).

Practical Problem-Solving: Balancing creative ambition with real constraints (budget, postage, assembly time).

Performance Focus: Success was measured in RSVs and business conversations, not just aesthetic appeal.
